What Does God Do With A Person Who Kills Him/Herself?

Sermon Notes:

Intro: In life there are optimists, pessimists and Woody Allen. He concludes that there is no God and “suicide is probably the most reasonable response to the angst of existence.”

I. How does God view humans?

A. Genesis 1:27: Humans are created in the image of God.

B. Genesis 1:31: God called all He created good.

C. Psalm 8: A little lower than angels and crowned with glory and honor.

D. 1 Cor. 3: Our bodies are a _temple of God.

God cares about both the spiritual and the physical!

II. Suicide, the deliberate destruction of the body, is wrong! It goes against the commands of God and against natural law.

III. What is the eternal destiny of a person who kills themselves?

A. It depends of the person’s state of mind.

B. Faith is a gift and does not depend on mental assent (Eph. 2:8).

C. Did the person do it to rebel against God?

D. Was the mind overwhelmed because of _suffering?

Unrepented sin does NOT determine whether a person is _condemned.

IV. Life is not easy, but we have God’s promise to walk with us all the way!

A. Faith produces hope.

B. And “Hope does not disappoint.” Romans 5

Conclusion: Through Jesus we can say, even in the darkest hour, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.”

Why Is There So Much Suffering In the World?

Possible Answer

The assumption of the disciples was that suffering was a direct ___punishment from God.

But Jesus refused to accept either alternative saying, “neither this man nor his parents sinned.”

This happened so that the ___work of God

might be displayed in his life. (John 9:3)

God is not the business of balancing an eternal checkbook where you pay per sin with pain. Such belief is more than superstitious it is just plain __wrong.

Consider my Servant Job

Very well, then, he is ____in your hands

(Job 2:6)

Shall we accept good from God and not ___trouble?

(Job 2:10)

Why Should I Trust the Bible?

Maxwell Smart used to say, “Would you ___believe_...?”

I. The Hindus have the Vedas and Upanishads. Islam has the ___Quran__. Bahai has the Aqdas. Christians have the __Bible__.

II. We live in a cultural climate where __political___ correctness is run amok. If you make the statement that only the Bible is God’s revealed truth, you are ridiculed and attacked as intolerant and closed minded.

II. Why is the Bible true?

A. Because the Bible___ says it’s true.
- But that’s a circular argument.

B. __Archeology_____ backs up the Bible.
- It doesn’t back up either the Vedas or the Book of Mormon.

C. Natural _law_ and the __Bible__ correspond.

Romans 2:14, “Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the [Mosaic] law, do by nature things required by law, …they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness…”

- There are consequences when the society doesn’t follow natural law! The example of ignoring marriage.

III. What separates the Bible from all other sacred writings?

A. __Grace__ through faith!

B. Only the Bible reveals that God is _forgiving__.

John 20:31, “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Does God Blame Sinners Who Were Born That Way? Yes

Surely I was sinful at __birth

Baptism is wonderful because the sinner is given new _life

Does God expect us to change? Yes

Set Free From Sin

Doesn’t mean temptations evaporate
It means your sin is no longer your master

To Belong to Jesus Means

There is one greater than your __DNA

One who __loves and desires to lead you into a ___godly life.

Time Alone With God

Pray Psalm 51 and let it become your confession.

Does God really send people to hell forever? Yes

Just as a man is destined to die once and after that to face judgment. (Hebrews 9:27)

If anyone's name was not found written in the Book of Life he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)

Why does God tell us about hell?

Not so scare us into heaven
Because it's true.
The threats of hell are directed to those who believe that they are saved but they are not.
And for those comfortable in their sin.

The only answer to the terrors of hell is the One condemned to hell in our place.

Saving faith is born from this message

Holy Trinity Institute - June 24

Today we traveled into the mountains and visited the Holy Trinity Institute. This school began when the Pastor of the church began accepting orphand children from the communuty. After many years it grew into a large ministry of a boarding school.

At Ascension, Paula Fawcett´s, Sunday school class sponsors a student from this school and we got to met him. I have many more pictures of children for you to see and perhaps you also would consider sponoring a child for $35 dollars a month.

These children have a great chance of making in the world because of the ministry of Holy Trinity. They can receive support through their college years. Of all the kids we have the privilege of working with they have the most opportunity to make it out of poverty and take the message of Jesus to others in Brazil. 11 pastors have come from this school.

Sadly, we had a train wreck on the way up the mountains. Kathy saved the day and threw herself in front of the train and saved us all. (No people were hurt in the making of this picture).

Today will be my last update. The group will give a presentation of their experience several times so that you might also catch the passion and mission that the Lord Jesus has placed in our hearts. You, the people of Ascension, are helping to make a real difference in the lives of children in Brazil. The name of Jesus is being heard and honored because of your prayers and gifts. All glory to God alone!

Street Fair at the Abrasse Daycare - June 23

We invited the neighborhood children for an afternoon of crafts, balloon animals, paper airplanes, food, puppet show, singing and the good news of Jesus Christ.

And guess what? They came! Check out Dave Obermueller working those hand stamps!

About 60 some kids came and we had a great time. We also worked with some amazing people from the congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran. They are wonderful people.

Representatives from the Mayor´s office also came and witnessed our event and they were impressed with our afternoon.

Kids at the Daycare

We finished working on the walls at the daycare today and had some guests come over to inspect our work. In the afternoon Pastor Krug took us on a tour of the neighborhood and we met many people who belong to the Good Shepherd congregation. It was very moving to see the dire living conditions and yet with happy and inviting hearts they welcomed us into their homes.

This family had ten people living in their home. They make their living like most other people in this community by collecting recycling materials from the garbage. They were very happy to see Pastor Krug who is in the middle of this picture. They love him very much.

Work Day At the Abrasse Daycare - Brazil

Check out the green line of bricks and those that have been cleaned by our team. Connie, Haley, Chris, and Kathy are super hero scrubers!

We cleaned all of the walls and prepped them for a sealer. We will apply the sealer on Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon we will also canvass the neighborhood and invite the neighbors. We hope to have up to 100 kids come and enjoy our street fair on Wednesday.
